Informative and fun, conscience and fun, video and FUN. How many more kicks to the crotch videos does the world REALLY need? Digital video really is the new punk rock. These guys climbed the mountain and know what they’re talking about. A must-have for any aspiring viral videographer.

    It’s kinda weird to write this, but I’ve known Alan Lastufka for a long time, even back in the day when I had like only 2,000 subscribers, every day I’d be instant messaging with Alan and saying, “how can I get more subscribers?” and he’d always have an answer for me. And now my channel has 50,000 subscribers and there is no doubt that it is in part thanks to Alan.

    Alan knows more about YouTube than any body. Alan knows more about YouTube than YouTube does. I’m almost certain of that.

    There’s so much you can do to get to the top of the charts on YouTube and it’s not even that hard. It’s all about creativity and a little bit of determination and yeah, you need to stick to it, but I’ve always had Alan there backing me up, ready with the next suggestion. And now, in a way, everyone’s going to have that, which is kinda scary because I don’t want everyone to know my secrets.

I am not an YouTube expert but I was expecting more about the “psychological secrets” of making and “distributing” a five star video.The book contains to much information that I could find in the HELP pages of You Tube or in different user manuals.For example ,there are 14 pages about the Vegas Movie Studio (editing software made by Sony) and a whole section (chapter 4) about how to register with YouTube. Also,there are to many details about hardware (cameras, microphones, props).

    I have found some of the information I was looking for mostly in Chapter7(Building Your Audience),Chapter 8(The Community:Where Do You Fit In?),Chapter 12(Beyond the ‘Tube) and Chapter 113 (Becoming a Success Story).

    I think the book might be useful to an absolute beginner who do not have the time to sit in front of his computer and learn online how to start with YouTube.

    Unlike most books that cover specific online sites like Facebook or Google, this goes far beyond just the nuts and bolts mechanics of how to work with the site. Yes, there’s the prerequisite information on how to upload videos, how to link to your videos, how to create channels, etc. But where this book excels is in teaching you what happens *before* you even fire up your browser. If you’re interested in nothing more than posting that funny pet video you happened to capture last Christmas, then you probably don’t care about most of the “before” stuff. But there are people who consistently and professionally produce video content and use YouTube as their distribution channel. This is the audience to which Lastufka and Dean speak. Videos are stories, and you will learn what makes up a good story (and more importantly, how to tell that story in 10 minutes). Once you have your story, you have to film and edit it in such a way that the production quality doesn’t detract from your overall message. That’s covered here as well. And then after you get two or three videos online and someone other than your mother is viewing them, you may need to think about how you market yourself in this venue. Lastufka and Dean make sure you have all the information you need to make solid choices up front before you accidentally get popular and end up stuck with some brand you never intended to portray.

    Bottom line, this is an excellent book. The material is solid and comprehensive, and they back up everything they say with actual URL examples from YouTube. Again, if you are going to post on a semi-regular basis on YouTube, this is a must-read.
